SiriusXM’s 90's channel is doing their countdown this weekend of the top 30 songs from this week in 1992 and it jolted my brain awake to the fact that I’ve now had my drivers’ license for almost exactly 24 years.
Most of the time that I listen to these countdowns in the 80's and 90's there’s always a few songs here and there that I don’t remember. I remember ALL of these songs. The first few days I had my license I had to have driven about 400 miles all around Colorado Springs while blasting whatever was on the radio. The song above was playing the first time I hopped in my car (an abominably bad 1980 Pontiac Phoenix) by myself.
A month later my stepdad got so frustrated with the Phoenix’s many breakdowns that he swapped it for a 1983 Chevy Celebrity that was awesome (no, really) just before my 17th birthday. If I remember right, this was the first song I heard on the Celebrity’s radio:
Good lord, I feel old.

Though I am a bit behind, I do feel your pain. This year I will have had mine for 16. On top of that, I looked in the mirror this morning and found three grey hairs on my head. Ugh.

I was a bit behind to start, because I waited too long to get my learners’ permit. Better than my older sister, though. She didn’t get hers until she was about 22 or so. By that point I had bought a CRX so she got the Celebrity and we bounced it between us back and forth a few times until the end of 1999.
The grays are popping up at an alarming rate in my beard, which means pretty soon I’m going to look like Santa.

I had stopped listening to top 40 by 92 because I was a cool Junior in High School. By then it was all gangster rap and alternative. Blasting out the speakers in my mom’s 1983 olds cutlass supreme brougham.

My favorite genre is (or was) alternative rock, but I’ll listen to just about anything. My tastes are all over the map. There were some good pop songs out when I was in high school, though.
At the time I was really into Oingo Boingo (very underrated band), and I wore out copies of Blood Sugar Sex Magik by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Flood by They Might Be Giants.

Ahhhh... Blood Sugar Sex Magik... The last good album before they went to shit. Good times.
